These bookstores are not only places to buy books, but also reflect the linguistic and cultural diversity of Mallorca. Here are some must-visits for all book lovers on the island.
One of the 20 best bookstores in the world according to the Financial Times. La Biblioteca de Babel, named after a novel by Borges, is a place where you can enjoy literature and wine in a historic setting with more than 25,000 books and a cozy cafe with a terrace. The books are mainly in Spanish and Catalan, but there is also an international section. They also organize other activities such as concerts and book presentations.
Rata Corner is the best independent bookstore in Palma, full of books, vinyl records and graphic works. They have a selection of the latest in literature, graphic novels, fanzines, history books, music, film, art and design. They also have exhibitions and organize cultural events. A few steps from the bookstore we find Little Rata, a place filled with books for children and young adults, toys, clever objects and cozy reading corners.
A bookstore specialized in antique books that has become a local landmark and was on the verge of disappearing when its owner retired. A young couple took over the bookstore and today it is back in all its splendor. The three labyrinthine floors are filled with more than 100,000 books of all sizes and from all eras. Most are written in English and the rest in Spanish, Catalan, French, German and the Scandinavian languages.
El Bazar del libro is a book nerd´s dream. It’s an amazing place where you can find real book gems at good prices. Opened in 1978, this bookstore was originally a wine cellar from 1780. Here they sell everything from a wide variety of used books to advertising from the 50s, school books from the 40s, old maps and other items from the past. All while you can enjoy a glass of wine or have a coffee.
Charming bookstore in Santa Catalina, opened in 2021 by former editor and literary agent Marina Alonso de Caso. On the shelves you will find a well-selected collection of books, mostly in Spanish and Catalan, but also in other languages. They also organize book presentations and reading clubs (in different languages) regularly, and there is a very complete corner with books for young book lovers.
Re-Read is committed to recycling and responsible consumption. It is a chain with stores throughout the country that sells used books at good prices, and in Palma they can be found in two locations. Here you can´t only buy books, but also sell your own.
