The food is the center of Easter in Mallorca

RubiolsMallorca and many of the regions in Spain celebrate Easter by preparing a variety of dishes that are linked to the customs of the Christian calendar.  Throughout Easter there will be an abundance of Panades, Rubiols, Cocarrois and Crespells. Despite being made from the same basic pastry, they differ greatly in taste. The Panades are a round, savory pie filled with meat, either pork or beef, and peas. The pastry of the sweet Rubiols is rolled thinner and filled with pumpkin and served as a desert. The Cocarrois is shaped like a Cornish pasty, but filled with Swiss Chard, sweet onions, garlic and raisins. The Crespells are sweet biscuits in different shapes made especially for Easter. It is typical for families from Mallorca to get together over Easter to make all the traditional food but nowadays you can also find them in the bakeries throughout the island.

mona-de-pascua1-564x5081Another Easter tradition is the figurines and sculptures made of chocolate called Mona de Pascua They can be in the shape of a rabbit, an egg, a cartoon character, etc. Many bakeries compete to display the most spectacular chocolate sculptures in their windows. They could be a building, a popular character or a representation of anything!

20130503-095254One of the other seasonal Easter dishes is a spin on the typically Mallorquin ‘Frit’ or Frito Mallorquin, a dish made with offal of pork, potatoes, peppers and onions. At Easter it is made with lamb, Frito Cordero. Combined with a number of wonderful herbs, the main one being dill which reputedly is a herb native from Mallorca, it is a great home-made dish as it is a blend of different colours and flavours.Traditional feasts of roasted lamb are popular events and on Easter Sunday, ‘food fairs’ are commonly held. Here residents get together to dance, socialise and enjoy the food they have prepared in their homes.

Easter begins on Palm Sunday in Mallorca

palma--644x362Easter is an important tradition throughout Mallorca and the preparation for Easter begins on Palm Sunday. To remember the events of the Passion of Christ, the celebrations begin with palm and olive branches being blessed at churches across the island.

Palm Sunday is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar after Christmas and Easter. On this day Christians celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. For many Christian churches, Palm Sunday, often referred to as “Passion Sunday,” marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Sunday. The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches. In Palma the celebrations of Easter Week begin this Sunday with the Passion Mass in the Cathedral of Palma followed by the procession of priests and believers through the streets preceded by the Bishop of Palma blessing with holy water the palm branches and olive trees brought by numerous spectators. It is customary to bring the blessed palm branches home to adorn the front doors as an element of protection for the family.

Scandinavian yacht charter organizer Navegara is expanding

Screen Shot 2015-01-26 at 12.11.27Navegara, the leading Scandinavian organizer of yacht charter in Mallorca. From the summer of 2015 we will also offer daily, weekly and long-term charter from Ibiza and Marbella.
Jonas Nilsson, charter manager at Navegara, is excited to offer existing and future customers the ability to charter boats from Ibiza.

– For us this was a natural step to take because we already had clients chartering boats from Ibiza in 2014. The timing is just right, as we see an increased interest in renting boats in the Balearic islands.

Princess-23mIbiza is a popular destination and the island is slightly smaller than Mallorca. It’s easy to understand why people want to discover the island’s diverse coastline by boat. Ibiza has caves, small picturesque bays, golden sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters. On the south side of Ibiza you have the famous wild nightlife, but on the north side it is the other way around, very relaxed and bohemian. Very much like the neighboring island of Formentera just south of Ibiza. Formentera is a very popular place to visit for boat charters and it is often referred to as “The last Mediterranean paradise”. You will understand why after a visit!

-Formentera is very special and we look forward sending guests to this lovely island on day charters. From Mallorca you need a week charter to be on the safe side when sailing. Just like in Mallorca, we can provide sailboats, motorboats and catamarans, with or without skipper/crew depending on the size and preference. Thanks to close cooperation with yacht owners and carefully selected charter companies, we will be able to ensure the service and quality we strive for. We have high standards for our suppliers, since it is important for us to deliver the best possible charter experience and create value to our customers, says Jonas Nilsson.

Navegara have a large and varied selection of yachts from Marbella and the famous Puerto Banus. Marbella is a major tourist resort on the Spanish Costa del Sol and has been the place to be for the rich and famous. And with an extensive facelift of Marbella town it is on its way back to former glory days. What will distinguish a yacht charter in Marbella from Mallorca?
– Around Marbella the distances are generally a little bit longer, but it will be exciting with new destinations! From Marbella you can easily sail to the mysterious and exotic city of Tangier in Morocko. I cannot wait to get there, Jonas Nilsson concludes.

Navegara arranges day trips, weekly tours and tailor-made tours in the Mediterranean, mainly around Marbella and the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Ibiza.

Interview on entrepreneurship in Mallorca

Fredrik Norrbin in MallorcaIn this post we ask some questions to Fredrik Norrbin about entrepreneurship in Mallorca and what he’s up to during the day.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up in Mallorca.

I moved to Mallorca with my family at the end of 2011. By that time the idea was that we would be holidaying here for about a year, but then we ended up staying. It’s hard not to like Mallorca!

What made you chose to stay?

For me, the challenge was to move from safe Sweden to a country I had only visited a few times, where I did not speak the language, to get everything to work out as we wanted. Now after about 3 years, it feels like the pieces have fallen into place.

You run a few projects, including SEO Ibérica, tell us more!

SEO Ibérica is the foundation of the various projects I work with during the day. I help to design and develop websites which we then drive traffic to and focus on search engine optimization.

What was it that made you start with websites and search engine optimization?

I worked with selling Search Engine Optimization (SEO) services in Sweden in the early 2000s when Google took over the market. Online marketing has always been present in various ways so I know how important it is for business owners to have a good visibility in search engines. Everyone uses Google to find information in different ways.

When I came to Mallorca, I noticed how difficult it was to find relevant answers when I did searches, so that is how the idea came about. The design and developing of websites goes hand in hand with SEO and is something that customers request.

What are your best tips if you want your website to get a higher ranking in Google but you do not have a good knowledge in programming and SEO?

I would begin by improving the titles of the website’s home page and all the pages. Each title should be unique, and contain the keywords you are focusing on the respective page. Once it is in place, I would spend time to start your own blog and networking with other industry professionals, partners, journalists, bloggers and others

If you are interested, there is more to read on my blog (in English), and further in depth information of seo-consulting.nu.

What have been the biggest challenges of starting and running a business in Majorca?

Paperwork is not my thing so I decided to hire a company to help me with company registration and accounting etc. Otherwise I would never got started. Since it is still noticeable that there is a recession, business owners hold on to their money and decisions take a little longer. But it definitely feels like it is getting better and better!

Do you have any tips for those who read the interview and are eager to start a business in Mallorca?

Nothing in particular really besides having a passion for what you do, or else you will give up too early. And I would like to know more Spanish, that would probably had benefited me a lot!

Finally, do you have any personal goals for 2015?

Good question! I will continue to double annual sales in SEO Ibérica. Then I want to continue to focus on my other projects. Navegara will expand its operations from focusing only on Mallorca to also offer yacht charter from Ibiza and Marbella. And I will soon launch a new exciting project that can be found on http://mallorcaguide.se/.
