In this section, we spoke with our wine expert Gabriel who gives us some of his favourite wines. Get a NIE number
For any sort of transaction in Mallorca you will need a NIE number. It is like the personal number you have in Sweden. A NIE number is necessary to purchase a property, to order internet connection, or to buy anything major in Mallorca. To get a NIE number you’ll need to produce your passport and two passport-sized photographs. The NIE is your Spanish tax office reference, identifying you as a foreign citizen, so the sooner you get it the better. Learn the language
An important step when moving to Mallorca is to learn a bit of the language. Entering a new community speaking a little Spanish will not only make your daily life easier, but will also help you to get to know the local traditions and culture better and to create a local network of friends and acquaintances. Although most locals can defend themselves in English, speaking a bit of Spanish is very appreciated. Moving with car
If you are bring a vehicle to Mallorca from your home country, it must be officially registered. If you have a home on the island, you can drive the vehicle with its original registration plates for only 30 days, after which you must display Spanish registration plates. You’ll also need to register your original driving licence with the authorities. Road tax is payable each year, and any vehicles more than four years old must undergo an annual vehicle safety check known as an ITV (inspección técnica de vehículos), at an official ITV centre.

Schools in Mallorca
There’s a choice of local and international schools on Mallorca, to suit the curriculum you’d like your child to follow. International schools often have waiting lists, so planning the timing of your move is important.British schools include: The Academy, Baleares International School, Bellver International College, King Richard III, Queen’s College. The French curriculum is offered at the College Français de Palma. The Swedish school in Palma is also very popular. For those seeking a bilingual education with an equal amount of Spanish and English, the well-equipped international school Ágora Portals is the largest private school in Mallorca and part of the Barcelona-based private school group NACE. Mallorca has around 70 wineries (bodegas) and in recent years many of the grape growers have opened their doors to visitors for tours and tastings. In our culture, wine is present in religion, celebrations and at mealtimes. Wine has sculpted our landscape and our architecture.

Gardening in hot climates requires very different approaches and plants then in the North of Europe. Our gardener Victor shared the wisdom he’s acquired from a lifetime of digging, planting, caring for, and feeding his own garden in Mallorca.

Q: The question our clients always ask is what’s the best tree to plant on your terrace in Mallorca?
A: This, of course, depends on the size of your terrace. But, in general, you’re likely to get the most enjoyment from trees that naturally stay rather small and don´t loose a lots of leaves. Lemon trees and olive trees, two of the big favorites amongst Northern Europeans, are actually ideal if the terrace gets plenty of direct sunlight. Both of these trees can survive with limited water and lots of sun.

Q: What about for a terrace in the shade or a courtyard (patio)?
A: If there is no direct sunlight at all then the ficus or the cica palm tree are the best options.

Q: What about if we want some flowers on the terrace?
There are many options that can sustain the climate here. Amongst them, I would recommend lantanas, bougainvillea, lavenders, oleanders and roses. Instead of flowering plants, I also like to combine plants with different leave colours.

Q: Are these plants relatively maintenance free?
A: Most don´t require much pruning. Occasionally, a new plant or very old plant will struggle and even die—it happens. But for the vast majority of plants grown in home landscapes, if you plant them in the right place and if you water carefully for a period of time to establish healthy roots, they will grow. Diseases are uncommon if plants receive the water and the sunlight they are supposed to have.

Q: How often do I need to water?
A: This is the most frequent question ever! The answer is: it all depends on the soil. A good soil and an abundance of it are the secrets to watering less. I recommend to use a soil that has a lot of pores so it does not crack when dry. The pots must have a drainage at the bottom and plates under during the summer time. Water the plant until you see water starting to come out at the bottom.  With a good soil and the right plants, watering should be carried out once a week in the winter time and twice a week during the hottest summer months.

Q: If I want a lawn, what type of lawn do I plant and when?
A: In Mallorca Bermuda grass is the only way to go. Bermuda grass requires a lot less water, it is very resistant to plagues and diseases and it spreads rapidly. The ideal time for planting is September/October or February/March.

Q: Where do you purchase plants?
A: There are a number of places with excellent customer service where you can purchase plants. These include, but are not limited to: Magatzem Verd, Can Juanito in Son Ferriol, Viveros Sa Porrassa in Santa Ponsa.

ES TRENC
Es Trenc is a favourite among families, tourists, sailors, nudists and residents of the island. It is a well-preserved area that consists of a 5 km long white sandy beach with turquoise seawater. Es Trenc is located on the south coast of Mallorca.

SA CALOBRA
Sa Calobra is a beautiful small beach situated between two mountains. This one of a kind beach with its torques water really is an experience not to be missed. It is located on the north part of Mallorca.

S’ARENAL PORTO COLOM
S’arenal Porto Colom is an amazing beach of white sand located in a wonderful position with both sunny open and covered shade areas. From the beach its very common to have beautiful views towards sailing boats and yachts because this is a popular spot to anchor. There is a small, charming restaurant for those who get hungry or thirsty. S’Arenal Porto Colom is located on the east coast of Mallorca.

CALA LLAMP
Cala llamp is an attractive beach for those who like deep water and rocks. On the beach you can find the popular Gran Folies Beach Club, which we wrote about in the previous newsletter. This is a well-known place and if you wish for a table, swimming pool and sunbeds you must call and make a reservation. Because the small rocky beach quickly becomes busy. Cala Llamp is located on the west coast of Mallorca.

Stylish restaurant with quality food in Palma
