The third and last blog will be about the craft beer bars in Mallorca.

Sullerica

Sullerica Brewery and its restaurant are situated in Sóller. The idea of the Sullerica was born by the vision of creating a high-quality beer which could be easily combined with many typical dishes and appetisers and which would remind in a certain manner of the valley where it has its origin: Sóller. Sullerica is a beer with orange blossoms. Sullerica is a 100 % natural brew, without additives or preservatives, unfiltered and unpasteurized, ensuring its artisan character.

Beer LOVERS

Their aim is to preserve this spirit in the brewery with an architecture that is very respectful of the building and its history. At the same time, they brew using the highest technology. You can order a wide variety of their beers from their online shop.

Ralf

Ralf Brewery was established in 2016 and situated in Maria de la Salut. Their pale ale “Tuareg” has a golden color and the US cascade hop gives the touch of citrus fruits. It is a perfect summer-beer, good company for a dish of fish. Their amber beer “Comandante” has red color with the taste of mandarin and pine flavours.

MÓN

MÓN is situated in the beautiful town of Sineu. They believe in the specificity, difference and plurality, and they apply this to beers with their own ways of making and local craft beer techniques. Their beers have intense, soft, and curious flavors and aromas: Rossa which is inspired by German Kölsch beer,  Torrat which is their version of Amber Pale Ale, IPA which has the intense color of English Pale Ale but with the addition of American hops.

Brusca

Brusca is a microbrewery and beer house which is located in Manacor. The place is an old windmill and they serve 8 different craft beers on tap. You can taste different kinds of Ale Beers and special beers which are prepared for Mallorca´s other microbreweries. Why Santa Catalina?

Santa Catalina is one of the most popular areas in Palma and it’s easy to see why: its location, close to central Palma, Paseo Maritimo and the port and a large selection of restaurants, bars and cafes. The atmosphere is a bohemian cosmopolitan ambience mixed with traditional Spanish history and people. The low buildings in lovely pastel colors in the older quarters of Es Jonquet and central Santa Catalina charms the most. The central point and gathering place is the market, which is something of Santa Catalina’s heart.

Where to eat in Santa Catalina?

The selection of restaurants in Santa Catalina can seem almost overwhelming, there is really something for everyone.

The newest addition is El Txoko de Martin that opened just before summer by the multi-award winning Michelin chef Martin Berasategui. The concept is based on Basque txokos, taverns where the products are well selected and without class differences on the visitors. The food here is raised to the skies and the prices are reasonable. Reserve a table in time, the restaurant is very popular and enjoy Spanish food from another world.

DUKE

Duke is a must when in Santa Catalina. Flavors from all over the world are mixed, with a “simple but not too simple” concept. We recommend their delicious lunch menu and if you come in the evening you are guaranteed a pleasant dining experience in a relaxing atmosphere with pleasant service. There is also a large selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

SANTA

On Calle Fábrica we find the newly opened Santa Restaurant, which bases its menu on the seven deadly sins. Bernabé Caravotta from Vandal surprises with flavors, colors and textures. The restaurant’s decor is inspired by hell with impressive decoration. Allow yourself to enjoy lust, greed and laziness without an ounce of guilt.

Chula Vista belongs to the same group as the popular Mexican restaurant Aquanauta. Come here for their wonderful quesadilla, stop for their delicious margaritas, do some people watching and enjoy lively Santa Catalina from their terrace.

MR XIAO

Mr Xiao is a newly opened restaurant on Calle Fabrica that serves modern Chinese dishes such as homemade dim-sums, Beijing duck and an Asian version of ceviche. The service is excellent, the food is good and reasonably priced.

At Bastian Contrari you can enjoy well-cooked Italian food, friendly service and a quiet environment. The food definitely tastes homemade and the large terrace offers plenty of space.

Where is the best coffee in Santa Catalina?

BISTRO 48

At Cafe Bistro 48 you find perhaps the best coffee in Santa Catalina! This Italian café also serves an affordable and delicious lunch menu. The staff are delightful and charismatic and make you feel welcome.

Bar Isleño is a classic in Santa Catalina that never goes out of date. Come here for a cortado and a llonguet (typical Mallorcan sandwich).

Elefante is a newly opened café that serves many vegetarian and vegan choices. In addition to coffee, we recommend trying their freshly squeezed juices and good salads that you can choose the ingredients for.

MAMA CARMEN

Mama Carmen has a philosophy based on a commitment to the environment and has created a colorful menu where you can find everything from specialty coffee to olive tea. And as they say themselves “our toasts are as good as our roasts”. There are many vegan and vegetarian options and most can be customized to suit the customer.

Best bread in Santa Catalina?

There are several bakeries in the area and something to suit everyone. Thomas Bakeshop offers freshly baked sourdough bread of the highest quality. Pan comido and Palma Bread are two Swedish bakeries and in addition to food bread you will find Swedish coffee bread, such as cinnamon rolls.

PAN COMIDO

What to do in Santa Catalina?

The modern museum Es Baluard opened in 2004 and has since been a reference for the cultural offer in Palma. The permanent exhibition offers works of art from Hermen Anglada-Camarasa, Joaquín Sorolla, Picasso, Jon Miró among many others. A second part of the exhibition is temporary and shifts. The building itself is well worth a visit and offers a beautiful view of the cathedral and the sea.

Ports in the Southeast of Mallorca

Many come to Mallorca to enjoy water in all its forms, may it be beaches, sailing or water sports. The most famous port and also the largest in size is the port of Palma. But you can also explore the ports of Mallorca’s southeast coast, by boat or without. The ports often offer a pleasant atmosphere, excellent restaurants and beautiful views.

Portocolom

Portocolom is one of the natural ports in southern Mallorca. It’s a traditional port with lots of charm and with Mallorcan fishing boats and pastel-colored houses reflected in the water, almost considered Portocolom’s hallmark. The name Portocolom comes from Christopher Columbus who is said to have been born here. Historical exports of wine to France from the vineyards of Mallorca took place here.

During the summer season, the harbor is full of life. Even though it is quieter during the low season, there are still restaurants and cafes open all year round. Restaurant Florian is one of them and they offer tapas, a large selection of other dishes and also an affordable lunch menu. You can enjoy your lunch in the company of a beautiful view of the harbor.

Sa Llotja is located just above the harbor clubhouse and is located on the first floor overlooking the sea and as it should be, they specialize in fish dishes. Another of our favorites is El Baúl in the beautiful bay of Cala Marcal. Here you can enjoy dishes such as pulled pork, fresh fish and fantastic cocktails and last but not least an excellent service.

Cala D´Or

The marina in Cala D´Or is located in the protective bay of Cala Llonga and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and lush greenery. There are a total of 563 berths and a large selection of restaurants and bars in the marina. There are several luxury yacht brokers and charter companies . You book a berth here directly in the harbour, and you can even anchor in the beautiful natural park of Mondragó

Yacht Club Cala d’Or in Cala d’Or is open to the public and here you can dine in their garden overlooking the harbor. If you wish, you can purchase a day pass to be able to use their infinity pool, sauna and the rest of the facilities.

At the sophisticated restaurant Port Petit you can have a delicious meal in a wonderful setting overlooking the marina. The french chef Jerome Lorieux serves dishes such as a delicious citrus salad, fresh grilled fish and a tender chateaubriand.

Cala Figuera

This is a charming little fishing village just outside Santanyí with about 100 berths where almost all are traditional fishing boats. Cala Figuera impresses with its incredibly beautiful location in a rocky y-shaped inlet lined with pine trees. Visit Cala Figuera and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, have a nice lunch at Bon Bar overlooking the harbor and finish with a dip in the turquoise Mediterranean Sea from the cliffs or on the sandy beach of Cala Santanyí.

Porto Cristo

Porto Cristo is located on the east coast and has historically served as a port for the city of Manacor, Mallorca’s third largest city. It dates back to Roman times. The city maintains its historic charm and blooms in the summer when it is filled with holidaymakers, both locals and tourists. The harbor has been expanded with a new marina which makes the harbor suitable for modern boats as well. Here, among other things, Mallorca’s pride Rafael Nadal has his boat. Just outside Porto Cristo we find the well-known caves “Cuevas de Drach” which you can read more about in our blog piece “Caves of Mallorca”.

The Quince restaurant sits directly on the water overlooking the harbor and can enjoy a wonderful mix of Spanish, Argentinian and Thai cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients. If you are looking for a more classic restaurant, restaurant Roland is an excellent choice with delicious food from their chef Roland Schulte. They serve international food from the market based on seasonal ingredients.

Porto Petro

Porto Petro, located near Santanyi, has historically, like many other coastal villages, served as a defense against pirates. Nowadays, the port is mostly a fishing port with many Mallorcan boats, llaüts. Despite its small size, the charming little fishing village has several nice restaurants along the water’s edge. At Es Celler 9 you can eat an excellent seafood paella on their lush terrace. Restaurant Norai is located right on the water’s edge and offers classic Spanish tapas, fresh fish dishes and much more, all prepared with local, fresh ingredients.

Mallorca’s best caves

It can feel good to take a break and escape from Mallorca’s sun and beach life and walk away or even under for a while. A cool activity that enriches both cognitively and visually is to discover and visit one of Mallorca’s several caves. In our blog we have listed them for you.

Caves are not only an object of wonder for visitors but also an object of study for scientists who have found irrefutable evidence of man’s prehistoric period and of many animal species that are now completely extinct. They are dark, silent places, where it is almost impossible to hear the fall of the time. They are clean and transparent. We can find formations that take on the impression of a Gothic interior, slender columns, graceful pointed arches and thousands of other breathtaking details. Our imagination can lead us to see spectacular forms in all the stalagmites figures, human forms, angels, serpents, cockerels, dragons, trees…. Mysterious, motionless, rigid visions that are indifferent to human gazes, and have that imposing superiority of nature’s marvelous creations. Perceive how nature is at work, discretely and silently, and so slowly that the advances of her mysterious work are measured in centuries.

Cuevas del Drach

There are the most famous and popular caves on the island. The Cuevas del Drach were already known during the Middle Ages and were explored between 1880 – 1896. It was back then when the lake in the caves was discovered. Since 1935 a classical music concert has been offered at the lake. The concert lasts 10 minutes and consists of pieces of live classical music played by a quartet of musicians. The tour takes about an hour, the length being about 1,200 meters, and includes a boat trip across the Lake. Remember to pre book your visit.

Cuevas dels Hams

Cuevas del Hams is also located in Porto Cristo and it’s one of Mallorca’s main tourist attractions. The caves are 10 million years old, but were only discovered by mankind in 1905. In a part called the Blue cave, you can enjoy the spectacular new blue lighting and an educational documentary “Discovering the past ”, about the history of Mallorca, its first inhabitants, the formation of the Hams caves and their discovery. Is there a better way to enjoy a hot or rainy day outside than experiencing 10 million years of history?

Cuevas d’Artà

You find these caves near Arta, in the north-east of Mallorca. They are hidden within one of Mallorca’s many famous dramatic cliff edges and inside we find spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations that make up mysterious images of Heaven and Hell, and a fascinating network of underground tunnels. It’s been said that an early visitor was the French novelist, Jules Verne, and that the caves have inspired his book Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The caves have been known about and visited for centuries. It is very likely that the island’s first inhabitants knew of them, as did the various populations that later inhabited the island. The guided tour comes with special effects and the various chambers are given names such as Hell, Paradise etc. The Hell chamber is one of the caves’ largest and most astounding chambers. There are rocks that resemble monstrous animals and everything has a hellish, magic quality that makes the visitor feel as if they have been transported to a place they had never even dreamed of. Another of the chambers is as large as the nave of Palma Cathedral and the Queen of Pillars, a stalagmite 22m tall, could almost be a Gothic column. It is growing upwards at the rate of 2cm every 100 years.

Las Cuevas de Genova

The Genova caves were discovered by accident during the construction of a well in 1906. A fascinating natural legacy carved drop by drop in stone for centuries. They form a group of subterranean galleries of calcareous origin that are united by corridors formed in a natural way. Its proximity to Palma and the communication facilities make them easily accessible to visitors and they are ideal to visit with children.

Cuevas de Campanet

The Campanet Caves are situated on Mount Sant Miquel, in the Tramuntana Mountains in Northern Mallorca. This tucked-away valley has all the charm of the island’s rural landscape. In 1945, a farmer who was prospecting for a source of water on land at So Na Pacs stumbled across the cave when he enlarged a small orifice from which he could feel a draught of air coming.  The caves cover a surface area of approximately 3,200 square meters at a depth of 50 meters and although fairly compact in size, the exuberance of their natural ornamentation is a wonder to behold. You can take a tour, which lasts about 40 minutes, that follows a pathway through different passages and chambers, some of which have small water pools. These chambers are known by such romantic names as Castillo Encantado (Enchanted Castle), Sala del Lago (the Lake Chamber), Sala de la Palmera (the Palm Tree Chamber), Cascada Sonora (Musical Waterfall) etc. The caves have inspired painters and poets due to them being one of Mallorca’s most highly regarded natural features.

Palma’s best rooftop terraces

Mallorca is more than beautiful beaches and picturesque villages. The island also offers a vibrant nightlife, especially in the summertime. And what is better than starting the evening on a roof terrace with a beautiful view over Palma bay and something cold to drink.

These are our favourite rooftop terraces in Palma:

Ç  the rooftop at El Hotel Llorenç

Plaça de Llorenç Villalonga 4

The rooftop terrace Ç of the hotel El Llorenc in the historic quarters of Calatrava offers a spectacular view of the sea and the Cathedral. There is a lower level with an infinity pool deck with sun loungers and Balinese beds that are reserved for hotel guests. Above are two levels of bar, lounge area and dining tables open for the public. Santi Taura, the well known Mallorquin chef, is behind the menu made of fresh, local ingredients.

Bala Roja 1

The five-star hotel Es Princep has a unique location on the city walls of Palmas´s Old Town. Their roof terrace Almaq offers a spectacular view of the Bay of Palma and Calatrava. Hotel Nakar

Avenida Jaime III 21

The roof terrace is only available to hotel guests during most of the day but in the evening it opens for outside guests. This is a great place to enjoy the sunset and a cocktail. The terrace is quite small but it has an infinity pool facing the rooftops of Palma. We also recommend the excellent Sunday brunch served at the Nakar Hotel.

Katagi Blue på Llaut Palace

Avenida de America 2

This microcosm of glamour and style is located in the otherwise very touristic area of El Arenal. You will find the roof top terrace and restaurant Kategi Blue high up on the seventh floor of the hotel Llaut Palace which opened in 2017. This impressive terrace is tastefully designed and offers a fantastic menu of Asian fusion. Well worth a visit to enjoy the sunset, live music and a glass of cava.

A day in Sóller & Port de Sóller

Sóller is a beautiful traditional town situated in the heart of the ‘valley of oranges’ in the northwest coast of Mallorca. It is a town rich in history, full of beautiful architecture. We will give you some tips and ideas on how you could spend a day or maybe even a weekend exploring, swimming and eating your way through some of the best Sóller has to offer.

Sóller lies 3km inland from its port, Puerto de Sóller, surrounded by mountains. The Modernist town is unique compared to the rest on the island due to its geographical isolation, being surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range. In the 19th century, the area was isolated from all other major towns on the island, making it easier to trade with French merchants arriving by sea. Sóller became wealthy because of the valley’s rich citrus groves. The oranges were shipped to France from Port de Sóller. Many locals went to work in France and returned wealthy to the town to build some of the striking Modernism/Art Nouveau properties that beauty Sóller today. Sóller is notable for these houses built in the early twentieth century, particularly those on the Gran Via which reflect the fin de siècle French term meaning “end of century” Art Nouveau styles.

The town is made up of narrow streets lined with historic houses of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. The focus of the town is Plaça Constitució which is surrounded by cafés and has a fountain in its center. Here you can enjoy a fresh orange juice made with the famous Sóller oranges or coffee. The plaça and surrounding area comes alive on Saturdays when the local market takes place and shoppers and traders create a buzz. The town is a good shopping center if you are looking for typical local Mallorquin products and crafts. Make sure not to miss trying an ice cream from Fet a Sóller or even better visit their shop in Sóller.

Plaça Constitució also hosts the church of Sant Bartomeu, the dominated distinctive valley landmark. The original building dates from some time before 1236. In 1904 a renovation of the baroque 16th-century church (1688–1733) was made. The elements of its earlier Gothic interior were preserved and a beautiful modernist façade was added on. Other attractions around the plaça are the ajuntament (town hall) and my personal favorite Banco de Sóller. This is a remarkable 1912 Modernism/Art Nouveau building with typical details from the artcritical style such as defining ironwork. Behind it is the Catalan architect Joan Rubió i Bellver, a follower of Antoni Gaudí. The bank’s organization was founded in 1889 with the money of emigrants who returned wealthy to Sóller. This truly traditional village can also offer you to visit the restored Modernism/Art Nouveau building, Can Prunera, which houses a fine permanent collection of art (including Kandinksy, Picasso, Warhol, local artists Miquel Barceló and Francesca Martí). The Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences and the Jardí Botànic are on the outskirts of the town. With its 14,000 inhabitants, Sóller is the commercial and cultural center of the Tramuntana Sierra and the starting point of many itineraries following mountain and coastal paths.

Sóller is linked by the historic railway, the Ferrocarril de Sóller, and by a highway with a tunnel, to Palma. Getting to Sóller is easy; you can drive, take a taxi or get there by public transport from Plaza España. Or try one of the most famous attractions and get there the good old fashioned traditional way with the Ferrocarril de Sóller. The Ferrocarril as well was built on the profits from the orange and lemon trade and completed in 1911. It departs from Palma and takes about 1 hour. The journey is an experience in itself as it passes through some wonderfully scenic routes through the countryside and mountains.

Patiki Beach

This is not your average chiringuito (beach restaurant/bar), Patiki encourages us to see them as an extension of our homes, a beach house for us all. You can spend your day on the deck, on the beach, swimming in the Mediterranean, eating, drinking or just be still, the options are plenty. Farm to table right on the beach. Flavorful colorful delicious fresh food that is a celebration of the raw ingredients supplied by neighboring growers. The menu rolls with the seasons, changing every day as they use what they have and create with what is delivered to them.

Es Reco

Es Reco is a relaxed restaurant right on the beach. You can easily spend the entire day here starting with the morning coffee, relaxing while the Port of Sóller slowly wakes up, or a chilled beachfront lunch with the family while the kids play in the sea. Es Reco also offers a happy hour for cocktails before dinner that shouldn’t be missed! Dine while the sun slowly sets in the Mediterian, enjoying Spanish popular dishes such as tapas, grilled meats and fresh fish.

Sollermar

Sollermar invites you to try a slice of paradise by exploring the coastline by boat! This friendly local boat hire business is dedicated to show visitors the beauty of the northern coast of Mallorca and the Tramontana Mountain Range. They provide trips and excursions in picturesque environments. Swim in crystalline waters, enjoy the calas and larger beaches of the northern shore, eat in the beachside mountain restaurants, experience the caves, diving, snorkeling and relaxing, the options are endless. They can provide numerous activities and excursions tailored to exactly what you desire whether it is a birthday party or other event. Barbeque somewhere, hike and choose to be picked up to return via the sea, everything is possible. Sollermar ensures a high level of personal service to make your coastal adventure perfect. You also have the option of hiring a skipper or drive the boat yourself – you have a range of boats to choose from.

Randemar

Randemar is situated in one of the most privileged areas of the Port de Sóller in an old Mallorcan home just in front of the sea. A dynamic husband/wife team is behind Randemar, where the combination of delicious Mediterranean dishes with stylish and modern décor is met. A mix that enhances the experience and captivates the visitor. The very talented interior designer Cristina Egurrola is the one behind the design.

Roof Top, Terraza Mar i Hotel Eden

Terraza Mar is situated in hotel Eden, and has one of the most spectacular balconies to the “Serra de Tramuntana”. The sunsets can’t get more marvelous than this! Besides the views the atmosphere is electric, how can’t it not be with the 360º views of Puerto de Sóller bay and the valley of Sóller. Relax to the vibrant chill-out music while enjoying exquisite cocktails watching the movements of seagulls, the small typical Mallorquin boats entering the port. If you are after an authentic delight for your senses with a lot of fury of the Mediterranean Sea, then this is the place for you.

Gran Hotel Sóller

Gran Hotel Sóller reminds me of the hotel from the movie “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. It has the same majestic turn of the century vibe to it! It’s pure architectural beauty. Gran Hotel Sóller originally built in 1880 the peak of the international architecture style known as Modernism or Art Nouveau. The Gran Hotel Sóller was built as a small residential palace. Pamper yourself and enjoy a stay in this elegant five-star hotel which has a full spa facility, roof terrace with pool and a meal at C’an Blau Restaurant that has a wine cellar, al fresco dining, and serves Mallorcan cuisine.

The best beaches in Mallorca

Mallorca is known for its beautiful beaches and transparent waters. There are actually more than 300 beaches and coves and it is not always easy to know where to go. There is a beach for everyone no matter what you are looking for and here we suggest our favorites!

Portals Vells

Portals Vells is a wonderful beach with lots to discover in the southwestern part of Mallorca not far from Magaluf. A plus is that it is child-friendly and provides shade in the early afternoon. Many boats choose to dock in the bay to spend the day at the beach or to have lunch at the nice restaurant at the water’s edge. There are several caves and cliffs nearby to discover.

Cala Sa Nau

Cala Sa Nau is located about 13 kilometers from Portocolom and you can reach the beach both by boat, car and on foot (if you are up for an adventure). The beautiful sandy beach is surrounded by rocks and pine trees and offers crystal clear waters with excellent conditions for diving and snorkeling. There is a nice restaurant directly on the beach and the beach is wheelchair accessible.

Es Trenc

Perhaps the most beautiful beach in Mallorca, or as many Mallorcans call it: the Caribbean of Mallorca. Es Trenc is over 2 km long, white, fine sandy beach with a turquoise water in the southern part of Mallorca. Nearby are the wetlands where the salt Sal de Es Trenc is produced and if you come early in the morning you can see flamingos at the salt fields. There are several restaurants along the beach and we warn everyone easily shocked that Es Trenc is a popular nudist beach.

Cala Portals Nous

The beach of Portals Nous (Playa del Oratorio) offers crystal clear water just around the corner from the exclusive port of Portals Nous. The beach has a blue flag and is about 15 minutes away from central Palma. At the beach you will find several restaurants such as Roxy Beach directly on the water, a perfect place to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Cala Deiá

Cala Deiá is a beautiful pebble beach with rock ledges. You can reach the beach by car and park in the small parking lot which is quickly filled up with cars or to take a half hour walk from the village down to the beach. There are two restaurants on this picturesque beach, Can Lluc directly on the beach and Cas Patró on the cliffs with incredible views. Bring your snorkel and enjoy a wonderful day by the sea!

Es Calo des Moro

This is perhaps the most photographed beach in Mallorca, Calo des Moro, just outside Santanyi. You park about a 20 minutes walk from the beach and walk the last stretch. You can easily be discouraged by the crowd, but when you reach the cliff ledge and see the crystal clear turquoise water and the beautiful beach, it is well worth the effort. The sandy beach is small, mixed with large rocks and surrounded by rocks. Just next door is the small fishing village with the beach Cala S’Almunia.

Es Carbó

Es Carbó is the perfect beach for those looking for peace and quiet. To get here you either park in Colonia San Jordi and walk along the beach past the beach Es Dolc (about 20 minutes) or you park by the lighthouse in Ses Salines and walk about 5 km to Es Carbó. The beach is shallow and suitable for families with children (those who can walk there). Bring a picnic to the beach as all it offers is the amazing nature that surrounds it.
