Ports on the north part of Mallorca

Previously we covered the ports in the southeast and southwest of Mallorca, the turn has now come to the beautiful and very popular Ports in the northern part of the island. Mallorca’s fantastic climate invites many to come and enjoy the water in all its forms, may it be beaches, sailing and yachting or watersports. The island is a heaven for boat enthusiasts, regardless if you have a boat or not, there are ways to still enjoy Mallorca’s beautiful natural bays, the stunning sandy beaches and the impressive rocky coastlines. There are many marinas that make for the perfect place to drop anchor and explore. They are well worth a visit for the beautiful views, pleasant atmosphere, excellent restaurants and shopping.

Port de Sóller

Port de Sóller and Sóller are beautiful traditional towns situated in the heart of the ‘valley of oranges’ in the northwest coast of Mallorca. They are rich in history and full of architectural beauty. Port de Sóller is unique compared to the rest on the island due to its geographical isolation, being surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range. In the 19th century, the area was isolated from all other major towns on the island, making it easier to trade with French merchants arriving by sea. Sóller became wealthy because of the valley’s rich citrus groves. The oranges were shipped to France from Port de Sóller and many locals went to work in France and returned wealthy to then construct some of the striking properties that beauty Sóller today. Port de Sóller also has a nice sandy beach with lovely turquoise water and a boardwalk with plenty of options. There are lovely “chiringuitos” (beach restaurants) such as Es Reco where you eat right in front of the water while the sun slowly sets in the Mediterranean, enjoying popular Spanish dishes such as tapas, grilled meats and fresh fish. Or there is also the very popular Patiki Beach which serves flavorful colorful delicious fresh food that is a celebration of the raw ingredients supplied by neighboring growers.

Port d’Alcudia

Port d’Alcudia is a popular resort town and holiday destination located on the northern coast of the island. Traditionally Port d’Alcudia has been a place for locals to spend their summer holidays. From about mid-April through the end of September, Port d’Alcúdia is bustling with people who have come to have fun and enjoy all that this port and its surroundings has to offer. For Mallorca, it is a relatively large port with a marina that can receive big ferry boats and therefore serve as an alternative to Palma for commercial traffic to nearby Menorca and Barcelona. This means that the port has two different areas: a marina and a commercial port.

Port of Alcudia´s history stretches all the way back to the Roman empire when the Romans used the port, then known as Pollentia, which was the capital of the island of Mallorca. It is believed that it served as a gateway for the north to other nearby islands, and as transport hub bringing goods to inland towns.

The large beach is the focus point in Port d’Alcudia, as well as the many activities and water sports from paddle boats to SUP to paragliding. The attractive village of Alcúdia is located about 5-10 minutes’ drive, it’s full of history with an ancient past that includes Roman, Phoenician and Arab cultures with a nicely restored ancient town center. Take a round of golf in Golf Alcanada with its very nice clubhouse, or visit The Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation, home to unique sculpture and a private collection.

You could also spend your time doing fun excursions from the port such as dolphin watching tours, glass bottom boats or why not a day trip to Menorca. The options of renting a bike and cruising along the boardwalk and over to the streets that wind along the marina and port are plenty. Many of the small streets in the port are lined with restaurants and bars that offer delicious meals in a wonderful setting overlooking the surroundings, serving Mallorcan and international cuisine. This is what’s great about Port d’Alcúdia; it has something for everyone.

Port de Pollenca

Port de Pollença is a traditional port with lots of charm and it is in Mallorca’s most northerly town. Like most parts of the island it’s livelier during the summer season. Port de Pollença can trace its roots back to a simple fishing settlement that rapidly transformed at the turn of the century, when it became a popular summer destination for Mallorca‘s wealthy upper classes. Many built grand holiday residences overlooking the port. It became an example of how tourism can completely change and renovate not only the economy but the entire village. Going from a tiny fishing pier at the end of the nineteenth century to becoming the core of the local economy thanks to the tourism boom.

The old fishermen’s dock where the fishermen harbor is was built between 1826 and 1829, today still surrounded by the traditional fishing boats, the “llaüts”. All this contrasts with the modern Reial club nautic building from 1962 that is open all year around. The club is located in the most sheltered area of the bay of Pollença and offers an impressive list of sports and social facilities, including a sailing school and a clubhouse with a restaurant and cafeteria.

Many artists, writers and celebrities made it to Port de Pollença attracted by its light and inspiring scenery and landscape; it has some of the island’s most spectacular views. Intellectual giants like Agatha Christie visited the town in the early 20th century and stayed at a hotel in the Pine Walk area, which she describes in her book ‘Problems at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories’. Experience and see what inspired Agatha Christie by strolling along the most popular enchanting Pine Walk for terrific views of the bay. Other things that one can see and visit while in Port de Pollença is the scenic Boquer Valley that runs north-east from the town, near the ruins of the pre-Roman city of Bocchoris, one of the oldest settlements on the island.

You can also stay in the town’s main square Plaça Miguel Capllonch. It is surrounded by restaurants, shops and bars, with the Church of Our Lady of Carmen lying to the west. Visit the weekly market that is held on Wednesdays. The market was officially created in1984 and is very  important today, especially during the summer as it has a large inflow of tourists. The Plaça Miguel Capllonch square is filled with traders selling fruit, fish, clothing and crafts. Finish off your visit to Port de Pollença by watching the sunset from the splendid clifftop vantage point of the old watchtower, en route to Cap de Formentor. The windy drive up is for the brave hearted and not for the motion sick people. The car trip is worth it, once there you’ll be rewarded by tranquil sweeping majestic views that will leave you breathless.

Get to know our new sales agent Frida Garby

Mallorcaresidencia is very happy to present our new sales agent Frida Garby. Frida has lived in Mallorca for 20 years and has extensive knowledge and experience of Mallorca. In this interview, we get to know her a little more and find out which are her favorite spots here in Mallorca.

Why do you like Mallorca?

I can never get enough of the sun and the really salty, turquoise sea! I also love that Palma offers an international life as if you lived in a European city (restaurants, schools, etc.) while everyday life is easy due to short distances and the mild climate.

Where do you live in Mallorca?

I have always lived in Palma and now I live in La Bonanova which is a residential area right next to The Bellver Park where I enjoy daily walks with our dog.

My favorite place on the island is… ..

The small church on the cliff above the beach in Portals.

What do you do in your spare time?

In the winter, I often go with family and friends to the mountains for lunch in a village, and when it is warmer, we often have an afternoon picnic on the beach. I like sports and I like to play paddle! For a few years now, I have also been part of a Swedish pop choir at Palma Music Studios!

Which is your favorite restaurant on the island?

Lume & co in Genova and Il Chringo in Palmanova are my favorites!

Which is your favorite beach?

There are so many nice coves but the beautiful beach at Son Serra de Marina is hard to beat.

Which are the two best villages in Mallorca?

Sant Elm and Fornalutx.

Which is the best Spanish word?

Poc a poc (in Mallorquin) which means “calm, one thing at a time…”

Last purchase?

A white t-shirt. You can never have too many!

Which is your favorite property right now?

Top 6 golf courses in Mallorca

Mallorca is a beautiful island with a varied landscape with everything from high mountains to beautiful beaches. This is also reflected in the design of the golf courses on the island. There are more than 20 golf courses in Mallorca and they all offer something special. Mallorca’s mild climate with more than 300 days of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 21 degrees offers fantastic rounds of golf even in winter when it is cold and snow-covered in most of northern Europe.

Although most golf courses are concentrated around the Palma area, there are nice courses on the northeastern part of the island such as Alcanada Golf, Capdepera Golf and Pula Golf. Some of the courses are of an international standard and have been designed by world-class players. Many also offer their own golf academy. Mallorcaresidencia has selected our 6 favorite golf courses in Mallorca not to miss.

Alcanada Golf

Alcanada Golf is located on the north coast of Mallorca and the golf course impresses with its stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and Alcudia Bay from 14 of the 18 holes. Robert Trent Jones is behind the design of the course that opened in 2003. This is a well-maintained golf course with large tees, perfectly cut fairways and greens in excellent condition. Thanks to the good maintenance and the beautiful views, all kinds of players can enjoy the golf course regardless of level.

There is also a golf school if you are interested in learning to play golf on this wonderful golf course. You can end your round of golf at the restaurant with a range of both Spanish and international dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.

18 holes, Par 72, 6499 meters

Son Gual

Son Gual is a golf course that blends perfectly into the Mallorcan landscape and in 2009 hosted the Senior European Tour. It is a course created for competition and is perhaps the most challenging golf course in Mallorca, even for players with low disabilities. It is a private 18-hole course located inland just 15 minutes from central Palma. Son Gual is always in perfect condition and it is not for nothing that the course is high on the list of the 100 best golf courses in Spain. Fairways are long, wide and curvy and with large greens that are well defended by bunkers. The round of golf can end in the restaurant in the clubhouse which looks out over the beautiful landscape and serves Mediterranean food depending on the high quality season.

18 holes, Par 72, 6629 yards

T-Golf & Country Club Poniente

T-Golf, formerly Poniente, was opened in 1978 with a design by the well-known John Harris and was then the masterpiece of the golf course at the time. After an almost complete renovation of the last 9 courses, the course reopened in 2018. The result is a very playable design with wide fairways, many lakes and bunkers and well-kept greens. Playing the course with the Tramuntana Mountains in the background and especially the view from holes 8 and 11 impresses most players.

18 holes, Par 72, 6450 meters

Golf Son Vida (Arabella Golf)

Golf Son Vida is the oldest and most traditional golf course in Mallorca. It opened in 1964 and has hosted the European Tour twice. It is located in the exclusive residential area of Son Vida and between two luxury hotels: Sheraton Arabella Golf Hotel and Castillo Hotel Son Vida. It is a classic golf course that suits everyone regardless of level but requires concentration. It offers a first part of the course that is narrow and surrounded by dense vegetation and a second part that is more relaxed and with less vegetation. The view over the Bay of Palma is amazing! The golf courses of Golf Son Muntaner and Golf Son Quint are located nearby.

18 holes, Par 71, 5529 meters

Pula Golf

Pula Golf  is beautifully situated in the eastern part of Mallorca between Son Servera and Cala Millor. In addition to a varied competition course, Pula Golf offers a complete experience of Mallorca with a hotel that is carefully designed in  a Mediterranean style, a restaurant that offers local and seasonal food and a wonderful pool area.

The golf course was founded in 1995 and then completely redesigned by José María Olazábal between 2004 and 2006 into a demanding and long golf course. If you play the course after the tee that matches your level, you can consider it as medium difficulty. The course has many water obstacles, medium to large greens and with several level differences. Pula Golf has hosted many competition events where golf legends like Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia and Rafa Nadal have played.

18 holes, Par 72, 6246 meters

Golf Santa Ponsa 1

Golf Santa Ponsa 1 is located in the southwest of Mallorca near the exclusive residential area of Santa Ponsa. It is an 18-hole course that was inaugurated in 1977 and has hosted the European Tour six times where players such as Severiano Ballesteros and José Maria Olazábal have played. The golf course offers a combination of long holes with others that are more achievable. The greens are medium to large and with relatively comfortable putts. El Terreno is regaining its former glory!

Even though El Terreno is an established area there are a lot of improvements and development with new projects. It’s being modernized and therefore increasingly more and more sought-after and popular.

Set by the Bay of Palma, El Terreno has an excellent location between Paseo Maritimo and the Bellver Castle Park.  It has an excellent location, just  by Bellver forest and a short distance from Santa Catalina, Palma city center and Paseo Maritimo. There are a lot of bars on the streets around Gomila Square. There are stairs going down to Paseo Maritimo promenade, ideal for cycling and jogging. At the top of El Terreno you can see and visit the 14th-century Bellver Castle.

El Terreno’s hillside streets are lined with elegant villas and modern apartment buildings. Historically, El Terreno has been one of the most exclusive areas of Palma and in the past mostly local residents lived here. It was home to many intellectuals and creative people. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it blossomed as a bohemian quarter.  Artists began to find their way to this sleepy but charming Palma barrio. The English poet Robert Graves headed for El Terreno upon arriving to Mallorca in 1929. Today we can find a street named after him. The legendary Bar Africa used to be at the end of Calle Robert Graves, today long gone, but it once was a very popular bohemian meeting spot.

But it wasn’t till after the Spanish Civil War in 1939 that El Terreno truly flourished. Spanish poets and diplomats such as Gabriel Alomar, American painter William Edwards Cook and French writer and playwright Georges Bernanos could be seen, strolling the streets of El Terreno. Some of the mansions and homes in which these celebrities lived still exist. Many of them are owned by their families to this day.

From the 1950s onwards, El Terreno became the flamboyant glittering center of the Balearic Islands nightlife, With Tito’s night club at its center, it was the place to be for jet setters! Giants within the entertainment industry performed in El Terreno and the area was tremendously glamorous and exciting. Back then, the area of La Gomila was the true hot spot for Palma’s nightlife. Unfortunately, after many of the old clubs and bars were closed down, the area lost its shine and over the years gained quite a bad reputation.

Today, El Terreno is gradually regaining its bohemian flair and attracting a new generation of artists, intellectuals and creative entrepreneurs. It has started growing in popularity again. More and more people are discovering the fact that it’s actually a prime location. The neighborhood is once again becoming very popular with both international and local buyers. Both business people and families are investing in property here.

CLICK HERE FOR OUR LATEST PROPERTIES FOR SALE IN EL TERRENO

Why El Terreno?

It’s not hard to see why: it’s a prime location! It is close to central Palma, Paseo Maritimo and the port. There are still many beautiful Spanish modernist houses, low buildings in lovely pastel colors mixed with the big villas with large gardens. Although you still will see many run-down and/or abandoned buildings, there is a certain morbid charm to the diversity of this area where old meets new and luxury meets disrepair. We find both the Swedish school and church in El Terreno. The Bellver Castle and the large, surrounding park nearby offer walking trails and a lovely green forest. Here there are lots of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Where to eat in El Terreno?

El Terreno is not yet famous for its selection of culinary cuisine but it is certainly working hard on improving its status. There are plenty of restaurants and bars on the streets surrounding bustling Gomila Square, moving down to Paseo Maritimo the range of restaurants, cafes and bars doubles.

HOSTAL CORONA

The newest addition in El Terreno is the newly reopened Hostal Corona. The concept of Japas = Tapas with Asian touch is set in a gorgeous 100 years old building with a fabulous garden. The garden restaurant has an enjoyable outdoor bar, a new bodega with an exclusive wine cellar, and an indoor restaurant on the second floor with a lovely view over the garden. Hostal Corona was converted to a Hotel in 1987 therefore its name and there are plans to reopen the hotel doors once again for future guests.

ROSA DEL MAR

On the sea side of El Terreno we find Rosa del Mar. Tour the world through its flavors, textures, smells and colors. innovative and sophisticated gastronomic journey based on the quality of the ingredients and seasonal products designed by chef Tito Verger. Your five senses will be awakening through avant-garde dishes and will make you enjoy an experience that you will not forget.

MERCAT 1930

Downhill from El Terreno, on Paseo Maritimo we find MERCAT 1930 which is a must when in El Terreno. Flavors from all over the world, dishes inspired by travel and love for different cultures. Culinary delights contain fresh ingredients to bring flavor and quality to the table. There are 13 gastronomic market stalls to be exact, where you will find Asian, Mexican, Mediterranean food, grilled meats, oysters and seafood, tartares, Iberian ham, cold cuts and cheeses, and cocktail and dessert bars.

BAHÍA MEDITERRANEO

On the plaza behind Plaza Gomila is Bahía Mediterraneo, a lovely dining experience in a captivating location. Enjoy “top level haute cuisine”, in a luxurious 1930s environment and with stunning views over the yachts and sailing boats in the harbor. The setting is just extraordinary, could be taken out of the “great Gatsby” movie. High stucco ceilings, décor in gold and white, large drapes and parquet floors, the restaurant gives you the feeling of an old ballroom.

TAQUERO MUCHO CANTINA MEXICANA

Come here for the tacos and mexican dishes, stop for their delicious mescal, have a beer, or try the different tequilas. Do some people watching and enjoy Paseo Maritimo in a pleasant and informal atmosphere from their terrace.

VOLONTÉ

At Volonté you find the best coffee in El Terreno! This Italian café also serves a delicious menu. The staff are delightful and charismatic and make you feel welcome.

What to do in El Terreno?

El Terreno’s location gives it a lot of advantages! There are a lot of things to do and see around here. A short walk takes you to the beautiful natural area of Bellver forest with green walking paths everywhere. The green park landscaped actually feels more like a forest. It’s very popular for walking, hiking, running, or even Mountain biking. Or just appreciate the tranquility of being surrounded by trees and birds, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city.

But if you are in the mood for a chic city vibe then head down to popular Santa Catalina. There you can enjoy a selection of restaurants, cafes and the Santa Catalina Market, the oldest market in Palma. Meanwhile Palmas city center will offer you shopping and the big city atmosphere.

When craving a marine atmosphere, stroll to Paseo Maritimo. It’s lovely promenade is a combination of strolling people and joggers with the yachts and the Mediterranean as companionship.

THE BELLVER CASTLE

The Bellver Castle is a must-see. It’s one of the few circular castles in Europe, built in the 14th century for King Jaume II of Mallorca. It has served both as a royal residence and as a military prison. It was placed under civilian control in the mid-20th century and now hosts Palma’s History Museum.

PALMA'S HISTORY MUSEUM

The city’s history museum gives you a tour through Palma’s history and its urban evolution from the Bronze Age up to the present. It hosts collections of archaeology and municipal heritage. It has a permanent Despuig classical sculpture collection and an exhibition dedicated to the influential 18th century Asturian politician and former prisoner of the castle, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.

THE BELLVER PARK

The Bellver park is where you can walk or run along the trails for hours if you like. Don’t forget to take a deep breath once in a while and admire the spectacular view. The park was named Bellver for a reason – it’s Mallorquín for “beautiful view”.

The Bellver forest jungle park is the latest addition in E Terreno and is an example of its upswing. This playground is just stunning, an oasis for children of all ages! It was newly opened and there are more than 20 new playground games made with sustainable wood and 17 trees have been planted to make it even more lush.

Outside Training: Personal trainers and yoga classes in Mallorca

Mallorca’s mild climate is optimal for outdoor training all year round and because of Covid, people prefer to train outside. The options are many, especially as the training industry is always in constant development. New training trends are establishing themselves, especially now that we have had to completely change our training habits due to the pandemic. Of course, paddle is very popular here on the island and Mallorca has many fantastic paddle courts. But this Mediterranean gem offers also a versatile wellness industry and many different types of yoga. In addition, personal training continues to dominate and gain even more ground as many gyms have had to close or change their concept. We want to decide where, when and how we want to work out. Flexibility and quality is extra important in our stressful everyday lives. Start the new year with healthy habits and establish a routine, but do it correctly and with the help of an expert. Take the step and treat yourself to a few weeks of training with a personal trainer. You get such an incredible kick and perform that little extra that is difficult to achieve when you work out on your own. There is so much to choose from in Mallorca, but here are some tips on different trainers and yoga teachers outdoors that we highly recommend.

Upcoming areas for investment in Mallorca

Buying property in Mallorca is a great investment, but with the current busy property market, many popular areas are caught in a high-demand, low-supply cycle. In addition, the last two years have also changed the focus of what type of property many of us want. This is why many of our clients are looking towards new areas for their property investments. There are a few factors to consider when looking for new areas to invest in, such as affordability, convenience and charm. To help you choose a promising location, we asked our sales agents to name their picks for upcoming real estate investment areas.

Magnus Nystedt  sees Son Rapinya and La Vileta as the new up and coming area that has it all! An oasis of peace and quiet just outside the vibrant heart of Palma. Historically Son Rapinya is one of the oldest districts built outside Palma’s ancient city walls and used to be a popular destination for Sunday outings, thanks to its location. The residents used to gather under the the shade of the gigantic pine tree during the hottest months of the year, to enjoy both the cool sea breeze and the view across the Bay of Palma.

Son Rapinya and La Vileta is a family oriented suburb, in Mallorca’s most popular school district, top local and international schools. And here you won’t have the problem with the neighborhood turning into a ghost town during the off season. There is a selection of cafés, restaurants and bars in addition to grocery stores and other necessities.

Although it isn’t steps from the beach Son Rapinya/ La Vileta compensate for it with its accessibility to nature and proximity to different sports facilities both indoor and outdoor such as the very popular Arabella Golf with 3 exquisite courses Son Vida being the oldest in Mallorca dating back to 1964. Arabella Golf Course is a golf lover’s heaven! Courses through the rolling hills of Son Vida, across beautiful greens, with outstanding views of Palma and its surroundings.

This charming Spanish residential area seems to have it all! Easy access to the city center, short drive or bike ride to downtown Palma and Santa Catalina.

And it’s also well connected with public transport. A countryside and peaceful living in the outskirts of Palma, like MF1825, what more could one need? Whether it be spending your time outside by the pool, on the golf course, or raising your children within a safe and loving community.

Our sales agent Josephine Cederqvist has noticed while working with the clients that after the pandemic property buyers are looking for properties with land and character especially in the suburbs and outskirts of Palma.

“I see the Mallorcan countryside as an upcoming area”, Like here favourite property MF2086.

A wonderful finca by the famous Tramuntana mountain range and with fantastic view. Josephine thinks it is perfect with its proximity to a cosy village (only 10 minutes’ walk) as well as to Palma. It also has the desirable west orientation.

While Charlotte Magnusson believes more in the somewhat undiscovered coastal trail southeast of central Palma; “One area that I strongly believe will be increasingly in demand is Cala Gamba / Coll d’en Rabassa”. This area is located east of Molinar, before Can Pastilla.  A reason is that the prices are still relatively attractive in this area in combination with the attractive location. “You have no more than 10 minutes by car to Palma city center”, says Charlotte.

Cala Gamba is a very charming and genuine small port with a lovely promenade with some cafes and restaurants alongside your stroll. Here, everything is open all year round and the majority of the population is Mallorquin, but you will also meet the occasional expat among the neighbourhoods. One item we have for sale in this area is MF2128 which Charlotte highly recommends. A very attractive and newly renovated house that offers a small garden with pool and a roof terrace with sea views.

Even though Son Armadams is now an “established” area there are a lot of improvements and development going on with new projects and it is coming “closer” to Santa Catalina and the city center. Jan Hedengård emphasizes Son Armadams location, situated between Paseo Maritimo and the Bellver Park. Central Palma can be reached on foot by just a short. Historically, Son Armadams has been one of the most exclusive areas of Palma and in the past mostly local residents lived here.

This can still be seen along the wide streets that are surrounded by high trees and the big houses with large gardens. There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars in the area. Jan recommends this area because it is quiet and safe, ideal for families with children as you will find the Swedish school amongst many others nearby. The Bellver Castle and the large, surrounding park offer walking trails and a lovely green forest.

Now that the nearby area Terreno is being modernized with EU fundings and also with large local investments from one of the wealthiest families on the island, Son Armadams will benefit from it. Son Armadams offers tranquility and a residential feeling with close proximity to Santa Catalina and the city centre. Jan wants to highlight 2 exciting building projects in the area MFP113 and MFP124, both projects offer high quality and luxury.
